They spent nineteen years trapped in this shuffle, in the same house, never connected, never together. But they woke together when the telephone rang at 12.30am. He choked on the words he had to say to her as the receiver dangled from his hand.

They sat together on the sofa that had been her bed for ten years before the eldest child moved out and she claimed his room as her own private space.
