She worried that it was possible to make things happen just by thinking, because so many things she had thought had come to pass. She made a conscious effort not to let her mind wander off in fantasy or in despair, lest imaginary situations flicker behind her eyes and an evil spell was cast without intent. Six years ago she had wished her dying mother would soon be released of this mortal coil. She wished it loud and hard. She conjured up every detail, the hospice, the coma, the waiting, the last breath, the phone calls, the funeral. So rapt was her dreaming she was distracted from driving and working and the act of love. She set in action motion she could not retract.
