On Saturday afternoons Karen would spend exactly eight minutes angry that she had no plans. Angry that the telephone did not ring. Angry that she was an afterthought. In the ninth minute she remembered she never called a soul. She never answered the phone or returned messages. She was always non-committal or unfashionably late. But no-one knows how important the small things are to Karen.
